Leaving Your Dog Home Alone

Leaving Your Dog Home Alone

Does your dog suffer from separation anxiety?  This is one of the most common issues that people have with their pets.  Here are a few tips that you can try at home to ease some of your pets stress.

Dogs are extremely social and if they were in the wild they would run in packs so being left alone is unnatural for them.  One of the most important steps is to make sure that your dog gets a lot of exercise.  The more exercise the better!  If you can, take them on a walk or even a run before you are about to leave home.  If your dog is tired, they are more likely to nap after you leave.

Scents can also play an important part in creating a calm environment.  Some people really believe in using lavender as a calming scent.  You could also leave a t-shirt with your scent on it down for your dog, as long as your dog wouldn’t consider eating it.

And as you are walking out the door, try not to have eye to eye contact or a conversation with your dog.  Your pet will not understand the reason you are giving them for leaving, the less of a deal you make about leaving, the better.  Also some people may have to consider confining their pet to a small space or crate.
