Kennel Cough
Kennel cough is a term used to describe a complex of infections-both viral and bacterial-that causes inflammation of a dog’s voice box and windpipe.  It is a form of bronchitis and is similar to a chest cold in humans.  Kennel cough is highly contagious between dogs.

What are the symptoms of Kennel Cough?
A constant dry cough with a “honking” sound is a good sign that your dog has kennel cough. Your dog may even cough up white, foamy phlegm, especially after exercise.  Some dogs can develop a fever and nasal discharge.

How do they get Kennel Cough?
Dogs can catch kennel cough in several ways.  It can spread directly from dog to dog, germs on contaminated objects such as toys and dog dishes.  Kennel cough is often spread in enclosed areas with poor air circulation like boarding or animal shelters. 

What should I do if I think my dog has Kennel Cough?
Immediately isolate your dog from any other dogs you may have at home. Call our office and schedule an appointment to have your dog seen.  505-869-2627. It is important that your dog is treated as soon as possible so that the rest of your dogs do not get sick.

Is Kennel Cough Preventable?
The best way to prevent Kennel Cough is to prevent exposure.  Vaccinations are also available for several agents known to be involved in kennel cough, including parainfluenza, bordetella and adenovirus-2.  If you plan on boarding your dog, please be aware that most boarding facilities require that your dog is vaccinated for kennel cough.
